Netdiscover

“Netdiscover” Netdiscover is a tool that is designed to gather essential information about the network, including details about the connected clients and the router. It provides information such as the IP and MAC address of the connected clients, their operating system, and the ports that are open on their devices. Additionally, netdiscover allows us to identify the manufacturer of the router, which can help in identifying potential vulnerabilities that can be used to exploit either the clients or the router itself during a hacking attempt. By utilizing this tool effectively, we can identify weaknesses in the network and use this information to launch targeted attacks.

During the Network Penetration Testing, we utilized airodump-ng to identify all clients connected to the network. In the second part of the airodump-ng output, we were able to view associated clients and their MAC addresses, even before connecting to the target access point. However, once connected to the network, it becomes possible to gather even more detailed information about these devices. Several programs are capable of performing this task, but for simplicity and efficiency, we will focus on two such programs. The first program we will discuss is netdiscover.

Although netdiscover is a simple and quick program to use, it does not provide very detailed information about the target clients. It only shows their IP address, MAC address, and sometimes the hardware manufacturer. To use the tool, we simply type “netdiscover” and use the “-r” option to specify the IP range we want to explore. For example, if the IP address of the network is 10.0.2.1, we can discover all the clients on this network by trying IP addresses from 10.0.2.12 to 10.0.2.254. To specify this whole range, we can write “/24” which means the IP address will increase up to 10.0.2.254. The command for this would be as follows:

Pressing the Enter key will initiate the program, and the output will be returned quickly, generating the results displayed in the accompanying screenshot.

The screenshot provided above shows that there are four devices connected to the network, with their respective IP addresses, MAC addresses, and MAC vendor information. While the netdiscover tool is quick and easy to use, it only provides basic information about the connected devices.
